Find a penny, pick it up

Money, originally uploaded by Leaca's Philosophy.

A penny saved is a penny earned.
A penny for your thoughts.

Yesterday, I found myself scrambling around the house looking for loose change. Both boys needed lunch money and I didn't feel like writing a check nor did I have cash. Luckily, I have jars, bowls, and various other containers located strategically around my house (...my bedroom make-up table, mudroom closet, laundry closet above washer, family room sofa table). This has proven to be a useful and decorative way to manage those annoying piles of coins I've found everywhere. What's more, I've found that I actually use pennies much more. With this economy in the clinker, we could use every penny we find! Click photos for original sources.

  1. You know, I wish my boys would eat hot lunch just ONCE in awhile! We've created a couple of foodies and harped about the evils of fast food so much, they will not TOUCH hot lunch - and some mornings I'd love to just grab some quarters from MY change jar and say GO!

  2. Right!! The middle school has more a variety (including salad) so, M occasionally buys. E won't eat anything but the chicken nuggets (in any form: patty, popcorn, etc). So,he usually buys 4x a month. LOL, I'm always excited in the morning to learn it's hot lunch day! It's the small things in life, right?!

  3. I love this idea - and if your kids are bored, when mine were little, I'd get them to sort the coins. They loved to go through them and then we'd have a penny jar, nickel, dime, and quarter jar. Here in Canada we can also have a loonie ($1) and twoonie ($2) jar. I always meant to get them rolling the money however that never happened and the jars were soon all mixed up again. Sorting/classification is considered a pre math activity so it is educational too!

  4. Joan, great idea!! My youngest used to count his money often. It seems that we're loosing the value of coins (no pun intended). When I was a kid, my dad would give us whatever coins we'd roll for the bank. Great way to motivate us to help. Thanks for your comment!
