I volunteered to bring in a "baked treat" to E's Halloween class party yesterday. On Wednesday night, I pulled out the cookie cutters (bat, ghost, pumpkin) and asked E if he wanted to help make frosted sugar cookies. He eagerly accepted and we began prepping. When I mentioned we'd have to run to the store to get some frosting, he immediately put on the brakes.
E: "You go, mom. I'll play."Wow, off the hook. My one moment when I was willing to go all out Martha Stewart didn't really matter to my son. Clearly, the pressure was all mine.
Me: "Um, no that isn't how this is going to work."
Both: quiet stare
Me: "Do you want me to bake these cookies or buy them from the store?"
E: Laughing and rolling eyes, "I don't care. Just buy them."
Store bought cookies it was and no one cared.

Kids really don't care. A cookie is a cookie to them, whether homemade or store-bought. Maybe I'll adopt that for a mantra.
ReplyDeleteThis post hit's home for me (the woman who baked 60 cupcakes into the night for 5 year olds who only cared about the plastic party toys from Walmart).
ReplyDeleteI'm not as domestic as I think I should be, so occasionally I over compensate. The reality is, my kid's don't care. They care about costumes and other things I do well. But baking and doing things a la Martha is 100% internal peer pressure.

I have the ingredients for cookies in a shopping bag sitting on my counter....day three, ingredients remain in the bag. Chances of getting those cookies baked today=very slim!
ReplyDeleteAlthough my kids DO care about homemade rather than storebought (food and halloween costumes) there's plenty of other things they DON'T care about (what kind of clothes they wear is a biggie). I think it's neat the way we can see our own priories reflect (or NOT reflect) in our kids! But this is a reminder to us all to ask the kids what's important to them, and even if something is important but seemingly out of reach we should talk to them about helping decide priorities!

Have never made a cookie... never will... My kids will remember that I'm there for every class event.... not that I baked!

Isn't that funny? It was nice when I realized certain things like this didn't matter to my husband. Whew, one less thing to worry about. But now with my daughter, it might matter in the future. We'll just have to wait and see ;)
