What it's really like to work at home - OM [one moment] meet up #23

I'm so grateful to have been able to work from home but must admit it is not without many challenges.  This video is a funny, but all too real depiction of the working from home experience.

I spent much of my week on the couch with my laptop and iPhone feeling awful from a head cold.  I remembered many years of going into work sick.  I hated doing it but the reality was that unless I was bleeding from my ears, my boss expected me to be in the office producing.  I used to keep hand sanitizer on my desk to let people know I was making an effort to not spread germs.  My moment this week came when I had a coughing jag (the kind that makes your eyes water to the point that people think you're dying and offer to call an ambulance) and was so glad it wasn't in a boardroom in the middle of a big planning meeting that I was leading.

Thanks, Angie (a.k.a. @modernpaper and Jumping Jack Designs) for retweeting this video.

om [one moment] meet upOM is a weekly meet up that promotes living in the moment.  Whether funny, sad, ridiculous, or banal, looking for these moments can promote balance in our lives.

  1. I love when she gets in the tub! I truly appreciate that most of my at home work does not require me to be on the telephone. And that no one can see the inside of my house.

    Hope you're feeling better!

  3. I love this video, so close to home.
When my kids were a bit younger, I would keep a pack of bubble gum by my phone. I would pass out pieces to the kids when an important call came in. Too bad it doesn't work anymore - now they have no trouble interrupting me and blowing bubbles at the same time.

  5. That video kills me! It is so dead on. "Oh, that's just the garbage truck outside." I remember those coughing jags at work. I'm happy yours happened at the home office - I will never underestimate the stress and deadlines that come from working on the couch with a laptop.

  6. Right?! The video makes me want to create a part two. Problem for me is that I can't think that quickly on my feet. Instead of blaming it on the garbage truck, I'd yell at my kid.

Jaci, the gum idea is great. I used to do the same with suger free suckers. Now I'd have to reach for the duct tape while shooting threatening glances.

  7. SO FUNNY! Thank goodness for cordless phones though, eh? I can walk away from most commotions! Remember when those things didn't exist and you'd stretch the kitchen phone cord out the door? SIgh...

Thanks for giving me something to look forward to, Lin. Almost makes me not want kids! Heehee.
